I Love Albuquerque
-
I have a deep affection for Albuquerque; it holds a special place in my heart. This city, situated in the state of New Mexico, stands as the 32nd-most populous city in the United States, boasting a population of approximately 560,218 residents in 2018, excluding the surrounding towns or cities, as per census data. Albuquerque is often referred to by two nicknames, namely The Duke City and Burque. The Sandia Mountains serve as a prominent landmark, gracing the eastern side of Albuquerque. Flowing from north to south through the city center, the Rio Grande adds to its geographical charm, while the western portion is defined by the West Mesa. Notably, Albuquerque stands as one of the highest elevation cities in America.
The city is home to several notable institutions, including Kirkland Airforce Base, Sandia National Laboratories, Lovelace Hospital, Presbyterian Health Services, and both the University of New Mexico and Central New Mexico Community Colleges. Shopping enthusiasts can explore various areas such as ABQ Uptown, Nob Hill, Winrock, and Coronado or Cottonwood mall.
Albuquerque hosts the renowned International Balloon Fiesta, the largest gathering of hot-air balloons globally, occurring annually in October at the City’s Balloon Fiesta Park. Expo New Mexico is the venue for events like the Gathering of Nations and the New Mexico State Fair. Popular attractions include the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the University of New Mexico’s Popejoy Hall, Santa Ana Star Center, and Isleta Amphitheater. Additionally, Old Town Albuquerque Plaza Hotel and San Felipe de Neri Church offer a delightful experience, with nearby sites like the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science, the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, Explora, and Albuquerque’s Biological Park.
The diverse restaurant scene in Albuquerque showcases the state’s unique New Mexican cuisine, with the famous red or green chile pepper growing along the Rio Grande river. Hatch Valley is renowned for its New Mexico chile peppers, a staple known and cherished by many residents who purchase boxes of the peppers annually.
Established in 1706 as a Spanish colonial outpost called Villa de Albuquerque, the city officially became a U.S. state in 1923.
